Hope Gillis has a passion for music. This is echoed through her soulful voice and her desire to explore music in its many dimensions.

Hope Gillis was born in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia in the early 60’s. She came into the world five minutes following the arrival of her twin sister Holly.

Although Hope’s love for music was prevalent she also loved the art of healing and found herself pursuing a nursing career. She has worked the past twenty years primarily as an Emergency Nurse.

In the early 90’s Hope was given a guitar as a Christmas gift. She took up study with a talented musician and teacher named Bonnie Price. Under Ms. Price’s instruction Hope learned a style called classical accompaniment. She uses the singular sound of the strings to draw forth a chronicle of songs unaware of their intentions to be shared with others in the years to come.

In 1997 Hope decided she wanted to free the voice of song she so clearly heard in her own head. With this she took up the study of voice with a skillful and enthusiastic teacher, Susan Dworkin. Under Susan’s direction she found herself performing in an amateur Opera Company called “Short Order Opera”. She started as a chorister in "Dido and Aeneas" and later performed as second lady (one of the three attendants for Queen of the Night) in “Die Zauberflöte / The Magic Flute.”

To further explore and gain new influences Hope studied voice under the colourful and competent tutoring of Nancy Denton Peck. Nancy was able to continue to add shades and textures to Hope’s vocal instrument allowing her to dive into songs such as Magic Wand and Sacred Angel.

Hope has performed for Music-cadie; Festival XXI (The Annapolis Region Community Arts Council); Annapolis Farmer’s Market; Wolfville’s Farmer’s Market; Fundy Folk -The Evergreen Theatre; Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens; Kings Theatre; Café Compose; The Night Kitchen, Acadia Cinema’s Al Whittle's Theatre; Night Kitchen On the Verge, etc.
